Route‑25 – Digital Innovation Hub for Smart Mobility is organising the Waypoints Spring School, an advanced training initiative dedicated to connected and automated mobility, to be held in Aveiro from 6 to 8 May 2026. The programme focuses on the convergence between technological maturity, the regulatory framework and safety, within the Portuguese context.
The Waypoints Spring School aims to create a space for learning, knowledge sharing and experimentation, bringing together researchers, industry professionals, engineers, students from technological fields, and decision‑makers interested in the challenges and opportunities of autonomous driving and cooperative systems.
Technology, regulation and safety in autonomous driving
The programme begins on 6 May, from 14:00 to 16:00, with a group discussion session entitled “Analysis of the convergence between technological readiness, the regulatory framework, and safety in relation to autonomous driving in Portugal.”
This session will foster debate among different stakeholders in the ecosystem, contributing to an integrated view of technological advances and the associated legal and safety requirements for autonomous mobility.
Cooperative decision‑making and shared perception in CAVs
On 7 May, the Spring School explores the core technological topics of connected mobility:
Morning (09:00–12:00)
The session “Cooperative Decision‑Making for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs)” examines how connected and automated vehicles evolve from individual autonomy towards collective intelligence on the road, through cooperation mechanisms and shared decision‑making.
Afternoon (14:00–17:00)
In “V2X and Cooperative Perception in Connected and Autonomous Mobility,” participants will learn how manufacturers and researchers apply V2X, sensing and perception services to create new connected mobility services. This session includes a conceptual overview and live demonstrations of service implementation at the edge and in autonomous vehicles.
Hands‑on sessions: Autoware, Edge Computing and MEC
The final day, 8 May, is dedicated to practical, application‑oriented sessions:
Morning (09:00–12:00)
“Autoware in Action: From Scenarios to Simulation” provides hands‑on experience with Autoware, an open‑source development kit for autonomous vehicles. The session covers collision detection algorithms and the use of Scenario Simulator V2, from scenario design to full simulation.
Afternoon (14:00–17:00)
The Spring School concludes with “Edge Computing & MEC Federation for Connected and Automated Mobility,” a session analysing the role of Edge Computing and MEC federation in delivering low‑latency, high‑reliability services essential for connected and automated mobility, aimed at network engineers, researchers and developers.
Integrated training within the Route‑25 ecosystem
The Waypoints Spring School will take place at the Instituto de Telecomunicações de Aveiro and is part of Route‑25’s mission to empower the national smart mobility ecosystem by promoting experimentation, knowledge transfer and the safe adoption of advanced digital solutions.
